Read more about how the COVID-19 pandemic worsens child malnutrition cases in the Philippines.
Overview
The past two years of the COVID-19 crisis have disrupted the supply of nutritious foods, access to essential health and nutrition services, and decent livelihoods that greatly affected the conditions of children in the country.
1. Challenges Brought by Malnutrition
Malnutrition has been associated with negative consequences for health, impaired cognitive development, and increased risk of developing chronic diseases. Rising cases of child malnutrition can also have persistent impacts on productivity and earnings in the future, both for the individual and society.
2. Increase of Malnutrition due to the Pandemic
COVID-19 pandemic further worsened the food and nutrition security of vulnerable Filipino families brought about by the loss of income and livelihoods among parents and guardians. As food prices keep increasing, vulnerable families can no longer meet the basic needs of a child's development.
3. Government Interventions
The government needs to take "immediate" and "targeted" actions to rapidly reduce undernutrition among millions of Filipino children through a sharp policy focus on health, education, agriculture and proper allocation of funds.
