Overview

The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the vulnerability of women and girls to gender-based violence due to quarantine restrictions, trapping them with abusers, and the lack of access to reporting services. The Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) has noted that VAW-related reports have increased in the last few years.

Here are the developments made by PCW to improve services for VAW victims:

1. Providing a more efficient reporting process for victims

Telecommunicators who handle VAW-related calls are receiving better training through gender sensitivity programs. Additionally, victims can now use the 911 hotline to report incidents.

2. Strengthening LGU services

Local Government Units (LGUs) are initiating VAW-related projects, such as the rehabilitation of Bahay Kanlungan, a temporary shelter for VAW victims in Quezon City. To learn more about how LGUs can assist VAW victims, visit this link.

3. Raising awareness about VAW

The Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) produced a documentary called "VAW Survivor Stories" where they interviewed victims who shared their personal experiences in dealing with VAW.
