Transport Infrastructure Funding Sources

The 2022 General Appropriations Act offers several funding sources for national and local governments to improve their transportation infrastructure.

Upgrading infrastructure to promote active transport can reduce the risk of acquiring diseases such as COVID-19, increase physical activity, and improve air quality. In the 2022 General Appropriations Act, there are several ready sources of funding that national and local governments can tap to improve their transportation infrastructure.

DOTr Active Transport Infrastructure

DOTr Special Provision 7 allocates P2 billion for active transportation facilities and requiring at least 50% of road space to be allocated for public transport, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Local Government Support Fund

Local Government Support Fund Special Provision 2 allows local government units to apply protected bike lanes, better pedestrian infrastructure, open spaces, and public parks for funding. Barangays, municipalities, cities and provinces can get up to P5 million, P10 million, P20 million and P30 million, respectively.

DPWH Roads and Bridges

DPWH Special Provision 8 requires the DPWH to build wider and accessible sidewalks, protected bike lanes, at-grade pedestrian crossings, and pedestrian refuge islands in road and bridge projects.
