Basura Exchange School Tiangge (BEST)

Basura Exchange School Tiangge (BEST)

Problem

The municipality of Burgos faced the problem of solid waste management, especially with the increase of plastic waste.

Solution

Barangay Poblacion implemented the B.E.S.T or Waste Exchange School Tiangge program. This is a plastic drive, where residents can exchange their plastic waste for food or school supplies.

Impact

Because of B.E.S.T, the barangay has managed to achieve and collect the following:

  • 293,990 pet bottles
  • 508 kilos of plastic wrappers
  • 1,1405 eco bricks.

The program also helped 120 individuals from five barangays of Burgos.

Implementation Guidelines

Guideline 1: Conduct an interview or survey with the selected beneficiary

Example: Barangay officials conducted house-to-house interviews to ask residents about their solid waste management and their knowledge of BEST. From there, they discovered that residents needed education on proper waste segregation and how to participate in BEST.

Guideline 2: Adapt the next step of the project based on the interview or survey

Example: The barangay conducted house-to-house interviews more frequently to gather more information and monitor the segregation of solid waste by the residents. They also implemented a No Segregation, No Collection policy.

Guideline 3: Take the project to remote areas

Example: The barangay also implemented BEST on wheels, to visit residents in remote communities. They also interacted with other LGUs, schools, and private sectors.
